| Byram Lakes Elementary School, Stanhope, NJ
A technology marvel, this school is equipped with a computer lab and media center, with Internet access, networked PCs and remote access for building management personnel. It is 10,000 square feet larger than another nearby school, yet the utility design is so efficient that it costs 33% less to heat and cool. The estimated cost was $17 million but the actual cost was 24% less, at $13 million. DRG was the prime consultant.
The additional up-front cost of high-efficiency equipment was offset by utility company rebates via the New Jersey Smart Start Buildings Program.
The school also features a cafetorium, library, gymnasium and art room featuring high windows for natural day lighting without work surface glare. The media center has built-in seating, like a theatre, and overlooks a courtyard.
The front canopy and bell tower were included as design alternatives. Thanks to good cost management, DRG was able to include these options. This was important to the town because it had been seeking a home for the old fire house bell, no longer in use. The bell now rests in the tower of the Byram Lakes Elementary School. |
